| Appartamento Ferdinando, owned by one of the four most respected noble families in Lazio, is a real jewel. It is set on a small and lovely ancient square featured in many movies. The apartment's windows overlook a lovely fountain restored by Bernini. The location is perfect since it is near the Tiber River, Tiberina Island, and the Teatro di Marcello. It is a 5 minute walk to the Campo de' Fiori to pick up flowers, vegetables and spices at the morning open-air market. Guests can stroll to the Campidoglio, Imperial Forum, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, or across the river to enchanting Trastevere, famous for its narrow streets and cozy restaurants. Yet, you need not cross the river to find a restaurant. One of the top restaurants in Rome, Piperno, is 2 blocks away and another of our favorites, Sanpietrino, is right in the palazzo building with a private entrance from the courtyard. Taxis, trams or buses are just 2 blocks away at the Piazza di Torre Argentina. The apartment is on the second floor of the family palazzo, which was built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The private quarters contain an incredible art collection, which if you are very lucky, the owners might invite you to see. Although it is of museum quality, it has never been open to the public. The palazzo door is guarded by a portier. In the interior courtyard, one finds quiet beauty and ancient frescoes. Guests walk up one story or take the elevator and enter a hall leading to a large L-shaped living room (with extra sleeping for one person) and a dining room area. In the living room are a phone (with American adapter for laptop connector) and satellite-TV with VCR. From the dining room one enters the completely equipped kitchen with marble counters, gas stove, oven, refrigerator with freezer, microwave, dishwasher, clothes washer and table with chairs. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a four-poster queen-sized bed with en suite bathroom with bathtub. The second bedroom has twin beds and a tiny balcony on a courtyard (not special, rather just for light). The second bathroom, which is accessed from the hall, has a shower. The apartment is spacious and comfortable with 9 ft. ceilings and large rooms. It is entirely private and utterly charming with terra cotta tiled floors and wood-beamed ceilings. Windows are double-glazed and have marble sills. The furnishings are beautiful, newly restored antiques from the family, and the architect-owner has taken care to use her impeccable taste to create an elegant and historical space and at the same time to provide modern comforts. Rooms are air conditioned in the summer and well heated in the winter, making the Ferdinando a spectacular home base in Rome any time of the year for a week or month for people that appreciate this level of comfort and quality. Guests also may use the furnished roof top terrace where there is a small house with sink. Here are found potted plants and really wonderful views of rooftops and monuments in this ancient section of Rome. |
