| Hidden by a forest of oaks and olive trees, Castel Vitiano is located on one of the highest peaks of the hills surrounding the medieval hilltop town of Orvieto. The property began as a stone tower, dating approximately from the year 1000, a classic military outpost for sighting and defense of the underlying valley, an obligatory passageway to Rome, 90 miles to the south. It was only after the period in which Castel Vitiano acted as a residence of nobles and clergy that the additional buildings (main house, apartment & guest rooms) were added. The final restoration occurred between the late 80's and early 90's by the current owner. The stone walls, terracotta floors and wooden ceilings are all made with original or recovered materials, and they contribute to the classic elegance of this hidden gem. The Tower, Torre Marcella, with an individual entrance contains a suite of extraordinary beauty made up of a ground floor with dining room, and three additional floors. The first floor is a living room with sofa bed and an enchanting view of the Orvieto Valley from the panoramic window. The second floor contains a double bedroom and bathroom constructed of handmade bricks. The third floor is a terrace/solarium with a panoramic 360 degree view. |
